Climate
The rainy season, which lasts from July to September, is actually a pleasant time to travel in Mali. The rain covers the dust and colors the country luscious green. Moreover, it doesn't rain all day and every day. From October to March (the 'Malian winter') the weather is relatively cool and dry. April to June are dry, hot and therefore dusty months. The hottest time of year is around April and May.
When to go
The Sandcastle opens from July 15th to August 31st 2008, and from October 1st 2008 to March 31st 2009.
The ideal suitcase
First of all: be aware of the fact that you are visiting an islamic country. Women need to try to cover their shoulders, legs (at least down to the knees) and upper arms and avoid wearing tight clothes. Furthermore, because of the temperature you better avoid any synthetic or heavy fabrics, such as jeans.
Cosmetics, medications and simple things like toilet paper aren't always available in Malian stores. Make sure to bring what you need.
It's a good idea to visit an outdoor shop to purchase some handy stuff specially made for adventurous travelers. This is what your ideal suitcase will look like (for a one-week stay):
- underwear (preferably cotton)
- T-shirts (2 long sleeves, 4 short sleeves)
- 3 pairs of light, thin socks
- one warm, woolen sweater or pullover
- one light jacket with hood
- 3 pairs of pants
- one party outfit (no black tie, but something nice when we go visit the notable of the town)
- one bathing suit
- a pair of flat shoes like plastic thongs (for showering or by the river)
- a pair of sneakers or sport shoes (no open toes)
- one scarf
- toiletries and cosmetics: shampoo, soap, toilet paper et cetera
- medications, a list of allergies
- a sports towel (lightweight, absorbant and fast drying)
- a LED-lamp (manually chargeable hand light)
- batteries for mp3 player or digital camera
- for ladies: tampons (only sanitary towels are sold)
- a pen and paper
- one plastic rainproof overall
- a light sleeping bag or two sheets sown together (this makes a very nice gift to leave to the locals!) in case we go camping
- a bottle carrier for around your neck
- a reading light (for instance one to be worn around the head)
- your favorite book (also a good and very needed gift)
- an address book (for the addresses of all the friends you'll make)
- small gifts for the local kids (baby clothes are needed the most!)
- A big backpack or travel bag (a suitcase is not at all handy)
- a money and passport carrier (the best are the ones you put around your neck)
