A unique and above all exciting way to explore Mali is by bicycle. The starting point of the one-week tour is the Sandcastle, where you will experience a warm welcome ceremony with live music, a barbeque dinner and a campfire.

You'll spend the night in the touareg tent in the Sandcastle's garden and in the morning Eva, the Cuban doctor who works for Doctors Without Borders, will examine you (please be sure to visit your own doctor before booking the tour). The group (10 to 25 people) will be accompanied by a guide and a sports teacher. Your luggage and all necessary camping materials follow by car. At each stop you'll set up camp for the night and eat in a local restaurant.

The one-week bicycle tour takes you through the beautiful scenery of the Niger delta, the savanna, the mountain cliffs and the Sahel desert to the final destination: a touareg encampment near the city of Douentza. Along the way you'll pass Lake Débo, the temporary home of huge colonies of migratory birds and even hippos.

Prices and conditions

The price for the bicycle tour is € 950,- per person. This includes:

  • welcome party upon arrival at the Sandcastle
  • physical checkup by a doctor before departure
  • accommodation for 6 nights (encampment or hotel)
  • all meals
  • 24/7 assistance of staff (tour guide, sports teacher)
  • return fare by bus to the city of your choice (from Douentza)

The tour is for experienced cyclists only, as the average daily distance is between 60 and 100kms — depending on the weather, the group's condition and the number of flat tyres.
