Pottery is an ancient art. Nowadays it is sold in markets anywhere but in the old days pottery was made by order only, usually as a part of the dowry. It took a lot of discussion between the craftsman and the woman of the family who placed the order, about the patterns, shapes and colors. Each family wanted a unique style.

The pottery workshop is hosted by teachers from Ségou, the home of the best pottery craftsmen in Mali. Unlike European pottery, it's all made by hand and baked on an open fire instead of in an oven.

At the end of the week all the creations will be exhibited, and then you can take it home.

In Mali, practicing pottery is exclusive to women. However, European men are welcome to the pottery classes at the Sandcastle.

Each Malian town has its own distinctive pottery, depending on the color of the mud, the compositions and the decorations.
