In Mali, transportation over water is more common than over land. An important part of daily life takes place in, on and around the river. That's where people bathe, wash their clothes and travel to other places. From a spiritual point of view, water is considered the source of life.

During this week you'll learn how to navigate a traditional Malian canoe, called a pirogue. This wooden boat is light, flat-bottomed, and seats 5 to 12 people. The people from the Bozo tribe (bozo means 'seaman' or 'fisherman') have used pirogues for generations, which makes them the best teachers for this 'week on the water'.

The daily training includes running and stretching with a sports teacher. Depending on the weather and the stream of the river, you'll sail away and set up camp on the banks of the river for the night. At the end of the week we'll have a competition, attended by an audience: tourists against locals!
